How to Cancel a Ticket
If you booked your ticket through the IRCTC website, irctc.co.in, or the mobile app, you can cancel your ticket through the IRCTC website. Upon cancellation, the refund will be credited to the same account used to book the ticket. You cannot cancel any e-ticket at the reservation counter.
Counter Cancellation and Refund Rules
Indian Railways has established several rules regarding ticket cancellation, one of which is the cancellation of tickets through a call. This rule applies only to tickets booked over the counter. You can cancel your ticket by calling the Railways at any time, as per your convenience. To cancel your ticket via phone, you must call the railway's enquiry number 139. However, make sure you make this call from your registered mobile number, i.e., the number provided during ticket reservation.
When making the call, you must provide your ticket's PNR number. After confirming your registered number, the railway will send a one-time password (OTP) to your registered mobile number. You must provide this OTP number during the call, after which the railway will cancel your ticket.
How to Get a Refund
After ticket cancellation, the next process is the refund; you don't have to wait for this. After ticket cancellation, you must go to the railway reservation counter and provide the OTP along with the ticket cancellation information. You will then receive your refund at the counter.
Rules for Cancellation and Refund Before Chart Preparation
If you cancel your ticket 48 hours before chart preparation, a flat cancellation charge is levied. This charge is ₹60 per passenger for Sleeper and Second Class, ₹180 for Third AC/AC Chair Car/AC 3 Economy, ₹200 for AC Two Tier, and ₹240 per passenger for AC First Class/Executive Class.
If you cancel your ticket 12 hours before the train's departure, a charge of up to 25% of the fare is deducted. However, if you cancel your ticket between 12 hours and before chart preparation, you will have to pay up to 50% of the fare.
On Cancelling RAC and Waitlisted Tickets
If your ticket is RAC or waitlisted and you cancel it 30 minutes before the train's departure, a fee of ₹60 per ticket, plus GST, will be deducted. This does not apply to the distance of your journey, regardless of how long or short it is.
Special Train Ticket Cancellation and Refund Rules
All passengers traveling on special trains will be screened. If your body temperature is higher than normal or you have symptoms of COVID-19, you will not be allowed to travel even if your ticket is confirmed. The ticket refund rules in such cases are as follows:
If multiple passengers are traveling on the same PNR and one of them is found unfit to travel. In this situation, if all the passengers accompanying them also do not wish to travel, a full refund of their tickets will be given.
If all passengers, except the passenger with high temperature, wish to travel, a full refund will be given for that person's ticket.
In all such cases, certificates for entry, checking, and screening of passengers will be issued by the TTE, stating that one or more passengers did not travel due to COVID-19 symptoms.
After receiving the certificate issued by the TTE, an online TDR will be filed within 10 days from the date of travel for the return of passengers who did not travel.
Facilities Found on Railway Number 139
The 139 number issued by the Railways provides various facilities to passengers. This number provides information on train movements, PNR status, train fares, and other information such as real-time train status, both by phone and SMS. The facility to book porters and taxis at the station is also available on this number.
